NOT CURRENTLY TAKING ORDERS
After many dozens of requests, I’ve decided to offer semi-custom wool socks, knit on an antique sock knitting machine right here in our cozy living room. The socks are sold by PRE-ORDER, and will be made in the order that I receive payment. Once I receive your deposit, I will email you to confirm your size and discuss color. Once we have agreed upon both, I will order your sock yarn and begin work. Please allow up to a month to receive your socks. I need that time to procure the yarn, knit the socks, and make it back to our rural post office when they’re open.
Many of you may balk at the price, and that is understandable. Let me give you a brief explanation. It takes at least 100 grams of sock yarn to make an average size pair of socks. That is a minimum of $10-14 in wool alone. It takes me around two hours to wind, knit, and hand finish a pair of socks–if I don’t make any mistakes. I know that you can go to Bi-Mart or Target and buy a whole pallet of socks for what I charge for just one pair. My price is not designed to be competitive. It is designed to be fair and sustainable (for me).
The basic style is a hemmed cuff, smooth leg, fully-shapped heel and toe, and grafted toe. The entire sock is seamless. The wool blend yarn contains just enough nylon to increase durability. A 100% wool sock will wear through fairly quickly, especially on the heel and ball of foot.
Colors: I purchase yarn from a variety or sources, both local and online. One of my favorite sources is KnitPicks. You can click here to see some of their sock yarn options.
This is the chart I use to determine sock sizes. Please indicate your European shoe size in the dropdown menu when you order. I use European sizing for simplicity’s sake, since the mens and women’s size are the same. Just find your US shoe size, then follow the chart to the top.
